Re: Favorite unknown Kurosawa?
Fri, June 3, 2005 - 9:17 AMNot only is it one of Kurosawa's best films, it is one of the best humanistic movies ever made, Dersu Uzala. -

Re: Favorite unknown Kurosawa?
Sun, June 5, 2005 - 7:37 PMI'd agree. Maybe we should start out by naming a few that aren't so well known, like 'Dersu Uzula.' I say we but I don't actually have any suggestions myself. Anyone... -

Re: Favorite unknown Kurosawa?
Mon, June 6, 2005 - 4:10 AMI'm a big fan of "Stray Dog" one of the earliest Kurosawa/Mifune collaborations. Anyone else seen it?

Re: Favorite unknown Kurosawa?
Mon, June 6, 2005 - 2:11 PMI just watched Dersu Uzala, Great. But my favorite "unknown" Kurosawa has to be Do des ka den. I've seen it a few times. Ironically it was a major box office failure at it's time of release and a major cause for Kurosawa's unsuccessful suicide attempt. Another couple would be Sugata Sanshiro, one of his really early films (about Judo) and The Bad Sleep Well, a 60's gangster drama.
Oh, one more, High and Low is incredible.

Re: Favorite unknown Kurosawa?
Mon, June 6, 2005 - 5:25 PMI haven't seen Do des ka den, or Sugata Sanshiro...but Dersu Uzala, The Bad Sleep Well (sort of a Hamlet takeoff), and High and Low all are truly great! -

Re: Favorite unknown Kurosawa?
Mon, June 6, 2005 - 5:57 PMI loved HIGH & LOW a lot. I've only seen STRAY DOG once, but I liked it.
I've heard a lot about Do des ka den- I always think of it when I'm near a train- but haven't actually SEEN it. -

Thu, June 9, 2005 - 5:32 PMI didn't like Do-deska-den. Stray Dog certainly and Sanjuro. -

Re: Favorite unknown Kurosawa?
Fri, June 10, 2005 - 8:34 AMLike I said, Do des ka den was a critical and box office failure, as have been many now classic films. So I'm sure some won't/can't feel it's power. Regardless, it is a beautiful, tragic, fantastically realistic portrait of strength and hope in the worst of circumstances. -

Re: Favorite unknown Kurosawa?
Sun, June 12, 2005 - 8:17 AMRed Beard is probably my all-time favorite Kurosawa film, although it's so hard for me to choose between that one, Ran, Throne of Blood, and others...

Re: Favorite unknown Kurosawa?
Sat, June 11, 2005 - 8:05 PMI love Dersu Uzala, as well as High and Low and Sanjuro and many others mentioned...
I am also very fond of Drunken Angel, the first Kurosawa film with Mifune... but I first saw it years ago on VHS, which had far superior subtitles to the current DVD I got off netflix... I was so excited to finally see it again, and on DVD... and was stunned by the atrocious translations... they ruined the movie.
