Film as poetry. In spite of being out of favor in Japan and suicide attempts (over the failure of Do des ka den), the genius of Kurosawa found it's way to Russia (the best thing communism ever did) to create yet another intimate epic.

Hello all. TIME magazine has recently published their list of their top 100 films of all time- Two Kurosawa movies made the cut... "Ikiru" and "Yojimbo". I was kinda surprised that "Yojimbo" made it as opposed to, say... "Seven Samurai", "Ran", "Kagemusha" or "Rashomon". Thoughts?

Of course this movie (2002) was not directed by AK but I think this is the last movie that he wrote.
Women often have an important part is several of his movies but here the prostitutes are with their gender and social status on center stage. It is hard for me to put see this movie as a Kurosawa creation. I would like to read what you think.
One humongous turn off for me was the horrible and anachronistic music.

Hi, I'm not necessarily a fan, or belong on this site, except that I have been trying to find the movie "Demon Pond" for several years. I saw this tribe listed and thought someone might be able to help me out. I'm really just looking to rent it, but all of the "normal" places don't have it: Blockbuster, Netflicks.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Ikuru (1952) / to live.
20 years or so later I enjoy this movie at a very different level. This is definitely one of the best movie in the dying-movie Genre.
Only a few scenes are shot with tele and it is amazing to see the composition of some wide angle scenes (waiting at the doctor's office for example).

I know this one divides Kurosawa's fans, but what did everyone think of "Rhapsody in August." I loved it, and would put it in that second tier of his movies with "High and Low," "Dreams," "Yojimbo," and "Sanjuro" - utterly brilliant in comparison with anything other than the 4 (generally) unquestioned masterpieces. I thought it was a kind of more mature "Dersu Uzala," I guess; philosophical ramblings from a fascinating, brilliant mind.

Last night I saw "Ran" again, on screen at a rep theater in Manhattan. It's such an awesome piece of moviemaking, full of big ideas, grand scope, and small touches. Kurosawa's use of color and movement has probably never been matched.

Among the many great scenes in the film, there are two that stand out the most for me. The first is the powerfully moving battle scene with no ambient sound, just mournful symphonic music. It's breathtaking. The second is the seduction scene where Kaede threatens to kill Jiro, opens a cut on his neck with her dagger, then licks up his blood just before kissing him. It's chilling.

Of course the justly famous last scene also sticks in the mind, along with others. Anyone else here have favorite scenes from "Ran"?
